CHIMWEMWE GROUP-VILLAGE SAVINGS TRANFORMING LIVES IN TANDWE1.

In the heart of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi, in a quiet village called Tandwe 1, a group of determined individuals came together with one goal: to change their future through unity and savings. The group, called Chimwemwe—meaning “Joy”—was established under the HELP Project facilitated by Njira Impact. What began as a small village savings and loans club has now become a beacon of hope for dozens of families in the community.
Each member of Chimwemwe Group contributes weekly savings, pooling their resources together to create a sustainable village bank. From this shared fund, members are able to borrow money to invest in small businesses, farming, or to respond to emergencies. The initiative is not just about financial inclusion—it’s about restoring dignity, building confidence, and creating opportunities that were once out of reach.
“Families are now dreaming again,” says Veronica Kaminja, the Community Facilitator working closely with Chimwemwe Group. “With the loans they access from their own savings, members are starting businesses, buying farming inputs, and paying school fees for their children. It’s encouraging to see the impact this is making at household level.”
Many members of Chimwemwe Group are using their loans to grow their farming businesses. Families have invested in buying fertilizer, seed, and farming tools. Others have started selling tomatoes, fish, or baked goods in local markets. The increased income has allowed them to buy essentials like food, soap, and clothes, and to access better health services for their families.
One member testified, “Before joining Chimwemwe, I was always worried about how to feed my children or where to find money when they fell sick. Now, I have a small business selling mandasi (fried dough), and during the rainy season, I farm maize and vegetables. I feel more confident as a parent and provider.”
Beyond the economic benefits, the group has strengthened a culture of responsibility and financial literacy. Members track their contributions, loan repayments, and profits. They encourage one another to stay consistent, and they celebrate their collective achievements during group meetings.
As Chimwemwe Group continues to grow, they aim to build a group-owned structure where they can hold meetings, store records safely, and conduct trainings. With continued mentorship from Njira Impact under the HELP initiative, the group is preparing for even greater impact.
“This is just the beginning,” Veronica Kaminja adds. “When people come together and believe in saving and supporting each other, the change is unstoppable. Chimwemwe Group has brought real joy and progress to Tandwe 1.”
