Flood-Affected Households in Nkhotakota Receive Emergency Farming Support

With funding from Blood:Water Mission, Njira Impact has provided emergency farming support to flood-affected households in M’gombe and Thandwe villages, under Senior Chief Kalimanjira and Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota District.
Through the Atsikana Akule Project, 50 households whose farms were destroyed by floods have received maize seed and fertilizer to help them resume farming and rebuild their livelihoods. The support is part of a timely emergency response aimed at restoring food production and household resilience following severe crop losses.

Speaking on the intervention, Njira Impact Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Linda Mwale, said the organization prioritized the distribution of maize seed and fertilizer after noting that the affected households had lost their entire crops due to flooding and required sustainable support to recover.
“These households needed more than short-term relief. Providing seed and fertilizer enables them to get back into production and secure food for their families,” she said.
The 50 households are part of 405 households benefiting from the Atsikana Akule Project. All 405 households have also received 5 kilograms of rice and scholastic materials, ensuring immediate food support while promoting continued education for children.

One of the beneficiaries, 53-year-old Eunice Phiri from M’gombe Village, expressed gratitude for the assistance, saying the support will help her care for her family of seven after losing her crops to floods.
“I am very thankful for this support. It gives us hope and the ability to start farming again,” she said.
Overall, the assistance was procured using over MWK 30 million, benefiting approximately 1,800 people from the supported households. Njira Impact remains committed to working with partners and communities to strengthen resilience and support recovery among vulnerable households affected by climate-related shocks.
