FROM DESPARATION TO HOPE.

Getrude Joseph’s Journey with MPCT Support.
In the heart of T/A Mbelwa ,GVH Kamba, Thyolo District, lives Getrude Joseph, a resilient 36-year-old single mother of three. Like many others in her community, Getrude found herself in a dire situation during the 2024/2025 farming season when a prolonged dry spell devastated crops and left households struggling to survive.
“We lived off meal and daily basic needs,” she shared. “There were days when we had nothing—no food, no money. We would sleep on empty stomachs.”
As hunger tightened its grip on her community, hope seemed distant. But thanks to Multipurpose Cash Transfer (MPCT) support under the EU-funded ECHO project, implemented by Njira Impact, Getrude’s story took a new turn.
With the MPCT funds she received, Getrude immediately prioritized purchasing maize and relish, ensuring her children could eat at least two meals a day. She also made a bold and strategic decision—to invest part of the money in goat farming.
“I bought a goat because I want something that will multiply and help me even after this project ends,” she explained with determination.

For Getrude, the goat symbolizes more than just livestock—it represents a sustainable path to self-reliance. Her decision to invest in something long-term is a testament to the strength and foresight of women who, when given the opportunity, take control of their future.
She now encourages other women in her community to think beyond immediate needs and consider ways to create lasting change for their families.
“Life is starting to look promising,” she says. “I’m grateful to Njira Impact and the EU for giving me a chance to breathe again.”
At Njira Impact, we remain committed to ensuring that every intervention not only addresses immediate needs but also builds the capacity of individuals—especially women—to thrive beyond the emergency.
