In the quiet rural setting of Mazengera Village in Traditional Authority Malengachanzi, something extraordinary is happening.
Once known for only gathering during traditional ceremonies, the 121 households of Mazengera are now united by a bold vision: to build wealth through poultry farming. This transformation began in October 2023, when Mazengera joined the Facilitated Collective Action Process (FCAP) under Njira Impact, supported by Spark Microgrants. Through a series of community-led planning sessions, villagers crafted a shared vision—”To become a wealthy community.” After intense discussion, they settled on poultry farming as their economic breakthrough.
By July 2024, their dream started becoming a reality. The community constructed a modern chicken shelter and stocked it with 200 chickens. With technical training and a financial boost from Njira Impact, the villagers were ready to rewrite their economic story.
Impact at Household Level
Today, the results speak for themselves:
- Every household receives eggs, contributing to improved nutrition, especially for children.
- 43 households are using organic manure from the chicken sheds, replacing costly fertilizers with sustainable alternatives.
- The project has already generated MK3.1 million in revenue from egg sales.
- Eggs are now available at MK300 locally, compared to MK400 previously—saving households money and making protein-rich food accessible.
- Local shops save up to MK3,000 per trip, no longer needing to travel far for egg supplies.
For community member Manes Nkhata, the change is personal:
“I used to struggle to find eggs and paid MK400 for just one. Now, I buy them right here in the village for MK300. Even better, I’ve used manure from the project in my garden, which saved me from buying NPK fertilizer.”

The people of Mazengera aren’t stopping here. With guidance from agricultural experts, the community is exploring locally producing their own chicken feed, aiming to reduce costs and boost profits. They envision expanding the initiative into a small-scale feed production business, creating jobs and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Mazengera Village has proven that with unity, a shared vision, and the right support, transformation is possible—even in the most rural corners of Malawi. What started as an idea around a village circle is now a beacon of hope and a blueprint for community-driven development.
